Ex Tottenham and Belgium Defender Names Lionel Messi As the Toughest Opponent He Has Faced.
Toby Alderweireld has declared Paris Saint-Germain forward and 7-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi the toughest opponent he faced. Alderweireld listed Messi’s pace as his greatest attribute as it makes it impossible for defenders to curtail him. The Belgium international and Messi had crossed paths severally with Alderweireld picking out their 2018 encounter in the Champions League.
Lionel Messi’s technical abilities has been hailed by former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld who has confessed the Paris Saint-Germain forward is the toughest opponent he has faced. Alderweireld highlighted Tottenham’s 2018 Champions League meeting with Barcelona as the standout fixture where he faced Messi.
Alderweireld revealed that the Argentine forward does everything a little too faster which makes it difficult for defenders to pin him down in a game.
“I usually read the play on the field and often I succeed. But Messi…ooh. One night at Wembley when we lost 4-2 against Barcelona, he was unprecedented…really unprecedented. “You can’t get a grip on him. Everything he does, he does it just that little bit faster than you. He does this, then he does that, it goes so fast. I really had a feeling I couldn’t do anything against him.”
Messi is regarded as one of football’s greatest player and Alderweireld also shares same sentiment.
